Terroirs
3 main types of terroirs. Montus, with its steep clay slopes covered with large pebbles. Bouscassé, with its rock plateaus covered in clay. Gascogne with its grey clay and crumbled limestone terroirs.
Montus
Having set his heart on this renowned 18th century terroir, Alain Brumont purchased Château Montus in 1980. This terroir with its large reddish pebbles is also the last remaining witness of the early Pyrenees dating back 40 million years. Nowadays, the Pyrenees deposit in our rivers large black pebbles marbled with white streaks.
Montus: Steep slopes (20 to 40%) facing due South, bathed in intense sunshine with large pebbles and yellow and red clay subsoil.
La Tyre: Steep slopes facing South-West with long and slightly less sunshine and a mild breeze that often airs the slopes heated by the pebbles.
Bouscassé
A family owned property for many generations. For the past 30 years, and by selecting only the parcels situated on the ridges, Alain Brumont has become the proprietor of the best terroirs on this hill.
Bouscassé: Fine clay with yellow and white streaks, covering cracked limestone. Sandstone terroirs line the edges with an iron oxide and manganese concretion, which produces more subtle wines.
Vieilles Vignes: A selection of the best clay terroirs with the oldest vines of which a large percentage have not been grafted (photo cep sanglier).
Argile rouge: 2 red clay areas rich in iron that produce a specific kind of wine.
Les Menhirs: Greyish clay in depth with very large 1 to 30 ton stone blocks shaped like menhirs are sometimes found in this clay at different depths.
Gascogne
A new terroir discovered by Alain Brumont who has been experimenting on it for the past 10 years.
Situated in Haut Armagnac, this terroir named « Peyrusquet » consists of grey clay and crumbled limestone. The layers of cracked clay a few centimetres deep, nevertheless perfect up to 1 to 2 metres in depth cover limestone cliffs. The Terroir is often compared to the Bordeaux right bank. The white Gros Manseng and Sauvignon wines are very refreshing and the red wines are full-bodied and well-balanced.
Climatologie
An eccentric climate between Gascogne and the Pyrenees. During summer, the days are hot and the nights are cool. In the Autumn there is very little rain. The winters are dry and cold (photo vignes givrées). A winegrower’s paradise.
